Can we pick and choose what scriptures we will obey? And claim they are just for those whom Jesus and apostles were talking to in the 1st century?
1Co 1:1-3 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, 2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: 3 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
(example in this epistle: chapter 11 on the headship of God to man and how we are to physically live that out in our marriages, and in relation to headcoverings; men over the ages and even today obey and take their hats off when they pray or enter into a “religious establishment”, why don’t women obey this scripture anymore?)
(another example in this epistle: in relation to spiritual gifts and the role of women in gatherings in chapters 12-14-if this epistle is written to “all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord“, then why are the spiritual gifts thrown out the window as just for that time and a modern definition applied to the role of women in the body of Christ? Immediately after saying in 1Cor 14:34-35 ”Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.” It says in 1Co 14:36-38 ”What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.” Does not the Spirit of God dwell in us? Then we must acknowledge that these are commandments of the Lord that were laid forth specifically in 1 Corinthians. But if the believers are not assembling as they should according to 1 Cor 14 and the in the previous chapters, then of course understanding of the subsequent exhortation about the role of women during a teaching cannot be lived out. It cannot be understood or accepted to a degree unless obedience in the other areas of fellowship is lived out. Excuses will and can be made if believers have already talked away the other scriptures first pertaining to the gathering meetings.)
Eph 1:1-2 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
(example from this epistle: are we not considered “the faithful in Christ Jesus” then this one is also not cultural for that time, but for us also. Then we cannot throw away the gifts to the body, of apostle and prophet(Eph 4:7-16) as some, if not the majority, have done today. Is the body of Christ perfect yet in its functioning and understanding? According to v13 these gifts are to be around until sanctification is complete)
1Th 5:27-28 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren. 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
2Pe 1:1-2 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord…
Jud 1:1-2 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: 2 Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.
(example from in this epistle: many churches are now “affirming” homosexuality and claim that God accepts all and those who are “gay” and professing christianity will be saved. But since this epistle is “to them that are sanctified by God the Father” then the words from are for today for us. Verse 7 in Jude clearly states that those who practice sexual immorality, including sodomy, will suffer the vengeance of eternal fire.
Rev 1:1-3 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: 2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. 3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
Rev 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book. Rev 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
(There are some specifically in the church today that claim that prophecy is not important and we should not spend our time studying it and getting all wrapped up in the endtimes; but is this not the day we live in, one in which our Lord will be coming back soon? Verse 3 above states that we are blessed if we read, hear, and keep the things in this book. And if we read and hear the prophecies of this book, should we not keep them; for according to chapter 22 if we do read and change what it says(pick and choose what we want to obey)then we will be cursed with the plagues that the prophecy mentions)
The Lord has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness. Should we not hold tight to all of them and not excuse some of the away?
